Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (Blues/Rock, 1970)

"The road and substance abuse killed it, but mostly ego killed that band..."

This gem was recorded in 1970 by Derek and the Dominos, a short-lived group led by Clapton that also featured guitar legend Duane Allman and top American rhythm musicians of the day like keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, drummer Jim Gordon and bassist Carl Radle.
The group existed for a brief period of eleven months (typical E.C at the time) during which they released only a single album. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs remains their glorious debut, their magnum opus, and their enduring farewell, all in one, while the title track has become a song that resonates just as strongly today as when it was first recorded in 1970.
Arguably the most compelling back-story here, is the unrequited and not-so-secret love of Clapton for best friend's wife, Patti Boyd - then married to George Harrison. The album was dedicated to Patti whom Clapton had nicknamed after the unattainable princess "Layla" of the Persian narrative poem Layla and Majnun and for whom he had written the homonymous song.
Besides this classing rock anthem however, lies a timeless blend of rock, electric blues and Southern gospel influences that has shaped generations of roots-oriented musicians. The album achieved gold album status within months of its release in late 1970, was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000, and today remains a ubiquitous entry in every decent rock list.
This album is also a great testament of what I like to call "The Clapton Curse". Duane Allman died in October of 1971 in a motorcycle accident, Radle passed away in 1980 of various addictions and Jim Gordon has been confined to a mental institution for 25 years after killing his mother with a knife. Actually, Clapton has my everlasting respect for doing what he did - over a series of misfortunate events that have clouded his life from day one. He never met his mother, he saw friends from many many bands die, he switched seats at a helicopter with SRV before it crashed, his son died after he fell out of a 53rd floor window and list goes on. Regardless, this is a shining example of rock and roll at its best.
