The Yardbirds - Having a Rave Up (Blues/Rock, 1965)

"The whole Yardbirds thing suggested a mythological aspect. I don’t think I even saw the band do a whole song. I just encouraged them to improvise and experiment..."

The Yardbirds are perhaps the most influencial rock act in the history of music, spanning a career that lasted over 40 years and featuring 3 of the most renowned British guitar players of all time: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. The latter joined the band to play bass but switched to guitar instead along with Jeff Beck. At that time, Page wanted to form a supergroup along with The Who members John Entwistle and Keith Moon which never happened, althought they did all record a song together featured in Jeff Beck's LP "Truth". After a mistake in the bands arrangements, Page set to find new members to fulfill a Scandinavian tour under the name "The New Yardbirds". Page and John Paul Jones knew each other already, so his first choice was a singer who declined the offer but proposed Rober Plant for that position. Plant also knew a drummer named John Bonham and thus, Led Zeppelin were born. Interestingly enough, John Entwistle and Keith Moon came up with the name when they suggested that a possible supergroup containing themselves, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck would go down like a lead zeppelin. Witness their story yourselves with this great dvd.
