The Stooges - The Stooges (Punk/ Garage, 1969)

"They thought we were a joke. Clown band. A novelty act..."

Even by 1969, Iggy Pop's reputation as a crazed entertainer had caught on, but The Stooges finds him atypically restrained; sitting back amidst the songs. Legend has it the band made up half the record the night before recording, and that the 10-minute hare krishna mantra "We Will Fall" was recorded just to pad out running time. But the band don't sound stretched-thin in the slightest.Instead, The Stooges' debut feels like an album blessedly lacking in the extraneous. It may've been the Age of Aquarius, but the band were keeping things real, raw, and raucous; a dark record issued at the tail-end of an impossibly sunny summer. People didn't want to hear it back then, but with every passing year, The Stooges' debut only grows in stature, in legend.

Let's Go Get It!
