Free: All Right Now, The Best Of Free (Hard/Blues Rock, 1991)

"We were always regarded as a good albums band..."

Regarded by many as the forgotten 70s rock gods, Free were unique in many ways, comprising virtuoso players steeped in the blues, who despite their on stage intensity and uncompromising live shows ultimately produced a handful of fine albums and memorable hits, the biggest of which, inadvertently precipitated the band's untimely demise. They split once, regrouped 6 months later to enjoy more belated commercial success abut had to deal with the self induced failing health of Hendrix-influenced guitarist Paul Kossoff. Incredibly by the time they split again they had still only existed for four years. In 1973, singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke formed the infamous Bad Company out of the ashes of Free, along with Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant. Me, I still remember an old Classic Rock magazine cover that depicted Free saying "Louder than Led Zepp, Before Black Sabbath". Years have passed since then and now it sounds a bit exaggerating but true nonetheless...
