MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (Hard Rock, 1969)
"Detroit is a realy heavy place to live in, and the kids have nothing to do so they pick up on the music thing to escape the factories. That's where the high energy comes from. In a sence, the black jazz musicians have the same lifestyle and experience as we have"
Rather than try to capture their legendary on-stage energy in a studio, MC5 opted to record their first album during a live concert at their home base, Detroit's Grande Ballroom, and while some folks who were there have quibbled that Kick Out the Jams isn't the most accurate representation of the band's sound, it's certainly the best of the band's three original albums, and easily beats the many semiauthorized live recordings of MC5 that have emerged in recent years. This relentless, aggressive set offers the frenzy of politicized garage punks blasting through giant stacks: a blitzkrieg of hard rock ignited from the dueling guitars of Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith and of the throttled vocals of Rob Tyner. The Stooges with barricade-busting ideals, the Five turned the Motor City into a Mecca of sonic excess and shattered the dazed dreams of hippie America. Definitely one of the most radical rock bands of the 60's, and certainly one of the loudest, the MC5 solidified their anti-establishment reputation as one of the first proto-punk bands, marrying several elements of what would later become punk rock: noise, politics and attitude. The "Detroit Hard Rock Scene" of the time also featured bands such as Frijid Pink, the Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk Railroad, all worth checking out.
