The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Psychedelic Rock, 1967)

"People are very aware of what's going on around them nowadays. They think for themselves and I don't think we can ever be accused of under-estimating the intelligence of our fans. The people who have bought our records in the past must realize that we couldn't go on making the same type forever! We must change and I believe people know this!"

OK, it may sound corny but the Beatles were much more than a happy little pop quartet with songs like "Love Me Do" and "She Loves You". Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a british psychedelic rock masterpiece and the Beatles have consciously synthesized such disparate influences as psychedelia, art-song, classical music, rock and roll, and music hall, often in the course of one song. And at last it caused some controversy due its drug reference, with songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (LSD).
Let me remind you here that back in the 60's it was a big deal talking about drugs and such. Many songs or even LP's were banned in both USA and England due to drug related lyrics such as the Smoke's "My Friend Jack" (who eats sugar lumps, hehe), The Byrds "Eight Miles High" and countless more.
Anyway, the LP became #1 where it stayed for 23 consecutive weeks and received both impressive critics and popular acclaim. However there was one musician who didn't like it at all. And his name is Frank Zappa! He even made a satirical parody of Sgt. Pepper's entitled "We're only in it for the money". Yet this is undeniably the peak of the Beatles experimentation, maybe even the peak of their songwriting skills.

Let's Go Get It!
